The National Acupuncture Detoxification Association’s (NADA) Acudetox treatment allows each person to attain the stillness and internal quiet necessary to explore how the behaviors of addiction affect him or her. This acupuncture treatment also assists individuals during the acute detox phase, the 2–7 day period in which withdrawal symptoms are present. The Acudetox treatment is not a replacement for conventional treatment and support meetings. Rather, it opens the doors to addictions treatment making all the components more effective. Once the recovering person had developed the internal strength necessary to explore his or her life, regular addictions treatment is warranted.

The Acudetox treatment involves the gentle placement of small acupuncture needles into 5 specific sites on each ear of a patient undergoing treatment. Clients report significant decreases in cravings, physical withdrawal symptoms, relapses, inpatient admissions, anxiety, insomnia and agitation. The NADA treatment helps participants become relaxed and more comfortable with his or her own thoughts, enabling the recovering person to experience a sense of “letting go” of tensions and apprehensions, and supporting quiet participation in a group setting with others who are involved in the process of recovery.

Many states, including Maryland and Virginia, allow addictions professionals to learn and implement the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association’s (NADA) 5-needle Acudetox Protocol under supervision of a licensed acupuncturist who must also be NADA certified. Completion of the full 70 hours of training (30 didactic/40 clinical) is required for certification. After this two-day seminar, trainees will be able to begin the clinical component that can often be completed in his or her own clinical practices. For those acupuncturists with little experience in this field, it is recommended that the Nature and Physiology of Addictions course be taken also. Upon completion of the clinical hours, acupuncture practitioners should also take the Advanced Acupuncture for Addictions course.

This course covers not only the actual acupuncture techniques and points, but also Chinese Medical and Western Addictions Treatment concepts as well as NADA’s program philosophies. Participants will also complete a pre-training assignment and several homework assignments.

The fee for this course is $325 (includes NADA’s $35 training fee). All course materials are provided. Meals are on your own. NADA also requires trainees pay the $65 first year membership and Certificate fee the first day of class. Refunds are generally not offered. Registration fees will be credited to a future training.

Dave Wurzel is a NADA Registered Trainer and was one of the recipients of the Association’s first ever Most Valuable Trainer Award in 2005. He travels extensively teaching the Acudetox protocol to acupuncturists, counselors, nurses and doctors. Dave has administered over 30,000 Acudetox treatments and is trained as a chemical dependency counselor.
